Skills:            song, drama, sense of story

Materials:      flashlight

Procedure:

  1. Read:  It’s Groundhog Day by Steven Kroll.
  2. Introduce children to the song:
        Sleepy Groundhog Song
        Sleepy Groundhogs
        Sleepy Groundhogs
        Sleeping in their dens
        Please be very quiet
        Oh, so, very quiet
        If you shake them
        If you wake them
        They will look for shadows

  3. Build a groundhog den. (Bear Blocks™ work great or use space under a table.)
  4. Children pretend to be groundhogs and creep into the den and sleep!
  5. When they have awakened, they come up from their den to see if they can see their shadows.
  6. If it is a cloudy day (no light) the groundhogs go back to sleep for six more weeks of winter.
  7. If the sun casts a shadow (light's on) they stay out of the den and celebrate an early spring.
