MCC Teachers' Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Transition time — How does the teacher get her group focused and explain what comes next?
  2. Presentation — How does the teacher present a new activity? How does she explain, give examples, perform demonstrations, ask and answer questions?
  3. Preparation — How does the teacher prepare materials, seating, grouping, etc. before presentation?
  4. Child involvement — How does the teacher involve a child in setting up next activity?
  5. Support — how does the teacher move from child to child or group to group for help?
  6. Praise — How often does the teacher give supportive praise to children?
  7. Positive comments — How often does the teacher give each child specific comments about their efforts or products?
  8. Question asking — Does the teacher ask questions to children and guide them to answers?
  9. Lecture — How often does the teacher refrain from "lecturing" or "talking at" children? Can she provide age appropriate guidance?
  10. Problems — How does the teacher deal with a situation that demands her complete attention to one child? (injury, tantrum, etc.)?
  11. Follow through — Does the teacher require children to follow through and help them to do so?
  12. Limit setting — Does the teacher set limits firmly and follow through?
  13. Clean up — How does teacher manage to clean up?
  14. Help — Is the teacher tuned in to those children who need help or refocusing before they drift off task?
  15. Anticipation — Is the teacher tuned in to potential problems before they get out of hand?
  16. Choice time — Does the teacher present an interesting variety of choices to the children? Do choice activities go on too long, too short, or just right?
  17. Check in — Does the teacher frequently bring the group together to report on how they are doing, whether they need help, whether they want to continue an activity or to change?
  18. Parent communication — What sort of communication takes place between teacher and parent?
  19. Meeting — Does the teacher come to the meeting prepared? Does she contribute to and follow through on decisions made?
  20. Planning — Does the teacher utilize MCC resources effectively? Does the teacher utilize preparation time effectively? Are the teacher's plans clear and comprehensive?
