Activity:
Wagon Relay: children run a relay race using wagons.
Skills:
cooperation, taking turns, playing by
rules
Materials: wagons,
cones
Procedure:
- Do a quick warm up activity to get the children focused and
listening to you.
- Line up 3 wagons. You will need 3 children per wagon team.
- Call out 3 children and have them stand behind a wagon they will push.
- Call out 3 more children to sit in the
wagon.
- Call 3 children to pull the wagons.
- Tell children they must work together to get the wagon
through the course (i.e. around a tree or cones) and back. Remind the children if one of their teammates falls, you must wait for them.
"Go slowly and look out for your friends."
- Teacher announces, "Ready. Set.
Go!"
- When the children are back have them switch places so that
at the end of the game they have all had a turn to: 1) push, 2)
pull, and 3) sit in the wagon.
Variations:
- Play with partners one pushing, one sitting.
- After playing several times, over a few days, have
groups of 3 children figure out positions (instead of the teacher
assigning places).
- Have the race include 3 times through the course, but
each player must push, pull and sit only once.
